Cloth diapers 101: a simple guide for new parents
Cloth diapers have come a long way from the folded langot our grandmothers used. Today's cloth diapers look and fit like disposables, but you wash and reuse them.
How a modern cloth diaper works
Most modern cloth diapers have two parts: a soft outer shell with a waterproof layer, and an absorbent insert that soaks up wetness. Snaps on the front let you adjust the size as your baby grows, so one diaper can fit for many months.
How many do you need?
For full-time cloth diapering, most parents keep 12 to 20 diapers. That gives you enough for a day or two while the last batch is being washed and dried. If you're starting part-time (for example only at home during the day), 6 to 8 is a good start.
Getting the fit right
- Choose the snap setting by your baby's weight, not age.
- The waist should be snug but leave space for two fingers.
- The leg elastic should sit in the leg crease, not on the thigh. Gaps here are the most common cause of leaks.
How often to change
Change every 2 to 3 hours during the day, or whenever the diaper feels wet. For nights, you can add an extra insert for more absorbency.
Start small
You don't need to switch overnight. Try a few diapers at home first, find your routine, then build up. If you're unsure about sizing or how many to buy, message us on WhatsApp and we'll help.
