How to wash cloth diapers: an easy routine
Washing cloth diapers sounds like a lot of work, but once you have a routine it takes only a few minutes a day.
1. Remove and store
Take the insert out of the diaper. Shake or rinse off any solids into the toilet. Store used diapers in a dry pail or wet bag until wash day. There's no need to soak them for hours.
2. Pre-rinse
Run a short cold rinse (or rinse by hand in a bucket) to remove most of the urine and residue before the main wash.
3. Main wash
- Wash in warm water if your machine allows it.
- Use a regular amount of mild detergent. Too little detergent leaves diapers smelly; too much can cause build-up.
- Avoid fabric softener. It coats the fibres and stops the inserts absorbing properly.
- Don't overload the machine so the diapers can move and get properly clean.
4. Dry
Line drying in the sun is the best option. Sunlight helps fade stains naturally. Keep the waterproof shells out of very harsh heat for long periods so the elastic lasts longer.
How often should you wash?
Every one to two days works well. Waiting longer can lead to stains and smells that are harder to remove.
Washing by hand
No machine? Hand washing works too. Rinse, soak briefly in warm water with detergent, scrub, and rinse well until the water runs clear.
